Motorcycle Rider  March 2004 Four star rating ****

The StarCom 1 is the latest in a long line of intercoms that have landed on my desk and have promised the earth. You know the sort of thing. Easy to use, crystal clear communications, simple to install, blah, blah, blah. But you know – this one worked. The real beauty is its versatility. As standard, the StarCom 1 can be used as a rider to pillion, rider to rider or for solo rider use. You just buy additional headsets and connectors when you need them to add a mobile phone or radio. Plus you can connect it to a satellite navigation or radar detection system.

I tested the StarCom 1 on two different bikes – an unfaired 800cc V-twin cruiser and a 750cc sports bike with an exhaust to rival a MotoGP bike. And it worked perfectly on both, even at speeds I shouldn’t have been doing. Unlike every other system I’ve tried, the VOX system actually worked, meaning I didn’t have to wire up a push-to-talk switch, plus I could cruise to the relaxing sounds of Chopin or race to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers thanks to the stereo music input.

There are plenty of bike communication systems out in the shops these days but there are also plenty of useless systems out there too. The StarCom1 however is in a league of its own, setting the standard for all bike inter-com companies, as this product is simply fantastic and really does work even at ludicrous speeds. The system provides such a clarity of sound it is quite easy to imagine that you are not hurtling down the road on a noisy bike at all. The tiny speakers are great when listening to music and pillion moans of “Slow down” were also very crisp indeed and also extremely amusing.

Motorbikestoday  2004

“I used a Mini Disc as an audio source with the unit and the sound was almost HiFi CD quality. Given the small size of the speakers , this was an excellent achievement. Speech was always clear and crisp no matter how illegal the speed, “

"I was so impressed by the whole package that I felt everyone else should be made aware of it."

Well I removed the Autocom (Active Rider) from the GS this week and replaced it with a Starcom1. I did this as the Autocom had developed a dodgy connection on the rider headset and needed sending back for repair. As I needed a system whilst its away I bought the Starcom, this gave me a good chance to do some back to back testing.
Both Units provide Rider - Pillion intercom and allow for the integration of a multitude of ancillaries, I have used them both with; IPAQ for GPS/Music, Nokia mobile phone, and Alan446 PMR.
Personal Conclusion
The Starcom1 gets my vote and I think it will for all who mainly ride alone. The system has superb clarity and is especially good at handling high speed phone calls (I used to get asked if I was outside/walking when using the Autocom and phone, to date no one has asked with the Starcom).

Tony,
Whilst using the web to look up your phone number to enquire about progress of my order for additional cables I happened to look at the testimonials and thought you may be interested in my comments. I am now approaching a year of use of a Starcom 1 unit. Originally installed on a Bandit and now a Triumph Sprint it has worked perfectly! I wear an open-face helmet and have no trouble carrying on a conversation at speed up to 100MPH, at that point the wind noise is such that I can't hear my pillion, but he can still hear me in his full face helmet perfectly.Using the phone is a dream. I don't think anyone has realised that I am hacking up a motorway on a bike! Brilliant! A final point which has proved very useful is the ability to fall back on a 9V battery. When using loan bikes, or when test riding new ones, the ability to pop the unit in a pocket with a battery and carry on using it has been a Godsend, and all this as standard!

Well I must say well done once again, just got back from Italy after doing 4700miles on my Bird with you system wired to a MP3, Nokia Phone, and now road angel gps gatso finder. I can tell you now that out of the 30 bikes that went, only 2 ran your system. All other bikes ran Autocom. Why I am again taking the time to say well done to your company as that at flat out speeds I could still hear my music and hold a phone conversation, had to slow down for the phoned (155mph ish) due to wind noise. "ALL" autocom units gave up the ghost at the 100-120 mark. Though you would like to know just how good your system really is. Thanks again.

Dear Sirs:
I received my order for the StarCom 1. I have installed the unit and have tested it out. I must say that you have under stated your unit. This is the best communications system I have ever used. I am currently a Law Enforcement Officer, (24 yrs.) employed by the Manatee County Sheriff's Office in Florida. I hold the rank of Sgt., and use to be assigned to the motorcycle squad. Even the head gear we used for communications was not near as clear as what your unit is. Needless to say, I am very impressed and very pleased with my purchase. Hooking up the unit was as easy as advertised.

Dear Sir,
I recently restored a 1982 Goldwing GL 1100 Aspencade. The original audio/telecom system needed to be replaced. After doing some research, I purchased your Starcom system and installed it. Today, I got around to test driving my Goldwing. The Starcom system works perfectly. Listening to the radio, talking to the passenger and even receiving a phone call is pure luxury, worthy of a Goldwing. The Starcom system is definitely top of the line with a price ticket that can't be beaten. I also want to thank you for your quick technical assistance to rewire my phone hook-up and to make adjustments to be able to use my stereo. I can recommend the Starcom system to anyone who wants it ALL.

"The Starcom 1 is great! I am using a Valentine 1, wireless phone, two way radio (both GMRS and CB) as well as the tunes from the my radio with no problems.  My wife can't believe the voice quality when she calls me to find out where I am while out wandering on the back roads.  I had one small problem with a bad connector and the folks from Tecstar were fantastic - sent me a replacement part and things worked like a champ.  We have used Chatterbox, Autocom, and the Commcenter for bike to bike and music over the last 5 years and the Starcom 1 is the best by far - audio is great (with my ear plugs in), no problems with ground loops or cross talk from two way radios or ignition noise - it's a great product."

The chapter has been investigating bike/bike and rider / passenger communications systems for some months with a view to choosing a system that we could recommend to all of our chapter members.  We also needed a radio link for our road captains and marshals for the ride outs that we conduct every month. After testing a couple of systems we have settled on the Tecstar system and a Kenwood PMR 446 radio (legal frequency and power output). We currently have 2 sets in use though the intention is to buy more. The main reason for choosing your equipment was that it did just what you said it would and was easy to fit.  I am also very impressed with the “after Sales” service that I have received.  Six bikes from Bridgwater Chapter took part in the Antwerp 500 mile run in October (24-26) and the ability to communicate between the bikes ensured that we did not leave any rider behind at lights or junctions etc with no idea as to what direction we had taken next. We also used the mobile phone and were told that the other party did not realise that the call was conducted from a motorcycle Travelling at speed in Belgium. In total we covered over 1250 miles over the weekend and I know that others in our club are going to order sets of equipment from you.  Please feel free to use any of the information contained in this email as a recommendation as to the quality of the system and very good service that your company embraces.

Greetings from across the pond!

I have to tell you guys that I think the StarCom1 intercom is completely amazing!   I installed my StarCom1 in my Honda Pacific Coast on Friday before a 200-mile road trip. The trip went just swimmingly and the folks who called me whilst I was on the road had no idea they were talking to me as I was zipping up Florida's Turnpike at 75+ miles per hour on my motorcycle!  I used to own a BMW K1200LT, which had integrated into it a BMW ComSystem intercom (OEM-manufactured by J&M). I have to tell you that your StarCom1 is every bit as good as good as the BMW ComSystem, does everything the ComSystem can do, and is only one quarter of the cost!

Cheers!

Just to let you know that the phone is working perfectly with the intercom. Was chatting on it just above the national speed limit and the caller did
not even know I was on my bike.
Thanks for all of your help.

I just wanted to send a quick email to thank all at Tecstar for the excellent service I have received from my first contact right through to the completed set-up of my Starcom Motorcycle Helmet Communication System.  The staff have been incredibly helpful in making sure the product that they supply has not only met the advertised specifications but has been tailored to fit my needs perfectly, I now have a very neat installation of the Starcom that is extremely easy to plug into, leaving me on the bike & ready to take phone calls within seconds.  It really is possible to hold a phone conversation without the caller knowing you are on the bike, does take some getting used to though, voices in the head! The only real disadvantage I have found with the unit is on day trips when I
have the rider/pillion intercom connected, no more silence from the back! Sue is able to talk to me very clearly at all speeds, comments on my riding skills, directions I'm taking & of course speed are now readily available all the way to our destination, we have tried to beat the unit but conversation has been easily held from 0 - Silly. I chose the Starcom over a more expensive competitor because of the infectious enthusiasm of the Tecstar staff for their product, it really was a good decision for me.

Dear Tecstar

The system is perfect, user friendly and it does exactly what it says on the box. Would I recommend it to other motorcyclists??? Absolutely !!! not only for the quality of the product though this alone is recommendation enough but for the fantastic after sales once again thank you.

Hi,
I bought a Starcom1 system from yourselves a few months ago, however I only recently started using the system on 2/8/03.Having entered The "Nick Sanders MOTOCHALLENGE" travelling the UK, my girlfriend & I found the system to be fantastic as it made our journey most entertaining. Rode once without the system on "boring". We both found the Starcom1 system worked brilliantly at "all speeds (100+).We would just like to congratulate you for supplying a fantastic intercom system at an affordable price.
         Many Thanks

My biker pal Mike, and I, purchased Two way radios and head sets for a tour around the highlands of Scotland, I then wanted to go one step further and add music to the set up to have some entertainment and keep up with, travel and news in general.  I expressed an interest in the Starcom 1 that Tecstar had developed and they sent me details, the Starcom was the answer it allows two way radio input, music input and with the addition of a second head set, my pillion can enjoy the music and we can talk with absolute clarity to one another, throughout the full speed range of my ST1100, and if you wish you can set the VOX to cut out the music whilst in conversation, the next item I shall be ordering from them will be the input for my mobile phone. My real reason for writing is to congratulate Tecstar on the product but perhaps more importantly the Customer service and attention to detail that the company afforded me, in particular Mr Allan Jones, he was very helpful and the speed of turn around from order to delivery in my last experience was amazing (Item posted on Tuesday night returned Thursday).
So thank you Tecstar, and for any one considering bike communications give Tecstar a call (01480 399499) you will not be disappointed.

We went to the BMF Tail End Show last weekend and as usual the weather was perfect.
Whilst there I purchased an intercom from StarCom.
The StarCom 1 rider to passenger kit we bought has really surprised us both with the clarity of communication it provides. Even at 'excessive' speeds a normal conversation is possible. This kit is excellent.
Connect the power wire to the bike's auxiliary wire, the other power wire to an earth. Plug in the headsets, audio lead and phone lead and it's done. The unit sits nicely under the seat above 'a box' near the rear light cluster. Held in place with the strap that holds 'the box' in place. Little velcro pads that come in the kit, stop it sliding about and prevent it rubbing anything. Ten minutes and it's ready to go, ten more minutes to fit the headsets into our helmets and we were on the drive setting the volume and VOX sensitivity. Getting the headphones in the correct place was a bit of trial and error, but once the place was sorted more velcro stops them moving.
The phone lead was an extra to the standard kit and I thought it was a bit short. It was too short to reach my phone when it was in my pocket or in Katrine's, so I emailed the company and asked for a longer one. I had a replacement lead through my letter box the next morning (FOC)!

Excellent product, excellent service. Now all I've got to get used to is talking and riding at the same time. Doing two things at once is not something I've mastered yet!

Tony

Next Weekend (23-26) I will have the pleasure of doing a demo of your Starcom1 system for about 150 BMW riders.  We have an annual get together in Death Valley, California of the Internet BMW Riders.  I'm sure I can generate some interest in your system.  I have never had a system that integrates all the functions as well as your system. The audio quality is Superb for a helmet speaker-type of headset. You are welcome to publish any of my comments. I brag about this system to everyone.
